Sittingbourne Striders were well represented today at Pretty Muddy, a 5K race which was held in Maidstone. Emma Hudson-Wright, Orla Mcgaley James, Carey Philpott Kite, Alison Kite, Aneta Steers, Sandra Gardiner, Paula O’Reilly, Emma Higgins, Lisa Burr, Elliott Mead, Susannah Ulyatt and Alison Kemp all crossed the finish line raising awareness and funds for Cancer.
James Reeves took on Herne Bay 10K and was first Strider home finishing in an impressive time of 41.42 (PB) followed by Daniel Barnard 46.05, Tabitha Stewart 47.28 (PB) Clive Crisp 50.54, Martin Stevens 53.01, Jackie Austen in 55.30, which was a PB and Dave Wood in 1.16.39.
Chris Mudge 2.15.38 (PB), Jeff Gardiner 2.28.41 (PB), Steve Russell 2.36.27 (PB), Alison Davey 2.49.35 and Ronald Smith 2.53.37 all took on Bewl Water 15 Mile Race.
Kirsty McBride represented the Striders at Cliffe Woods 5 mile race and finished in 48.32.
Gavin Malloch was the solo Strider at Hever Castle Festival of Endurance Half Marathon and finished in 2.17.57.
Testing conditions did not put 7 striders off as they entered the waters of the spectacular 38 acre Hever Castle Lake and River Eden. After completing the open-water swim of the Hever Castle Triathlon they hopped on their bikes for an undulating circuit through the High Weald of Kent which dipped into the stunning Ashdown forest. The largely off-road run circumnavigated the estate before returning to the award-winning castle grounds where they completed this challenging triathlon with a tree-lined finish beside the lake.
Steve Prince took part in one of the longer distance triathlons on offer…’The Guantlet’ middle distance triathlon involved a 1900m swim; 90km cycle & 21km run which he completed in 7.07.58 placing him 70th overall out of 182 entrants.
Andrew Howes was first home out of the 5 Striders who took part in ‘The Hever’ Olympic distance triathlon which consisted of a 1500m swim; 40k cycle & a 10,500m run.He completed the course in a time of 3:53:35 placing him 474th out of 631 who completed the event. Kevin Eastop was close behind him crossing the line in 3:55: 34 – 490th overall. Rachael Robertson 4:00: 21 – 513rd overall. Unfortunately some confusion lead Clare Eastop & Phil Robertson to not complete the full distance of the bike course but they still went on to finish the event.
Ellie Hynes took part in ‘The Anne Boleyn’ super sprint distance triathlon involving a 400m swim; 20k bike & 4k run. Ellie completed the course in 1:22:49 placing her 106th out of 827 competitors.
A sweltering 32 degree heat did not stop Striders Darren James and Gavin Malloch from taking on the Hever Castle half marathon on Sunday, 8 July 2018.
The tough but scenic course offered a challenge but the duo put their best foot forward with Darren completing the 13.1 miles in 2.11.38 and Gavin 2.30.36. The journey was made worthwhile with both athletes taking 3rd in their respective age groups.
Cliffe 5 Mile
Louise Marshall and Allison Bourne took on the Cliffe Woods 5 mile race. First back was Louise in 54.07 just 10 secs ahead of Alison in 54.17.
Race for life 10km
Abbey Campbell ran the race for life 10km at Mote Park, Maidstone in 1.06.
Hever Castle hosted a weekend of various distance triathlon events. Steve Prince competed in the Sprint Plus on the Saturday completing in a time of 2hr 43m 34s. While Gary Deacon and Luis Diaz took part in the Olympic event on the Sunday putting in times of 2hr 56m and 3h 10m respectively.
2 Striders took part in the Hever Castle marathon as part of the Festival of Endurance. The 4 lap course takes in 2 castles, 2 lakes and quaint Kentish villages all around the magnificent setting of Hever Castle. Rob Sapp put in a time of 4:44:27 placing him 32nd overall out of 51 entrants. Ashley Claridge, who ran with Rob, crossed the line in 4:44:35 which placed him 33rd overall.

Paul Bowditch entered the Sprint Plus on Saturday 24th, completing the 800m swim, 40k bike and 8k run in 2hr 27m placed him 66th out of a field of 343 entrants.
On Sunday 25th David Valenti, Joseph Lovelock and Ian Gower took on the Olympic distance event involving a 1500m swim, 40k bike and 10k run. Joe was first strider home, his first event since completing Ironman in August, in a time of 2hr 53m placing him 216th out of a field of 778 entrants. Ian was next over the line for the Striders finishing in 2hr 59m placing him 297 overall with David just behind him completing in 3hr exactly placing him 308th.
