Tonbridge 10k, Amsterdam and Abingdon marathons and Great South Run

There may be a chill in the air and rain clouds overhead, but that didn’t stop the Sittingbourne Striders this weekend. With runners competing in races at home in Kent, in Oxfordshire and down in the South — even across the Channel — there were plenty of great achievements to write home about.

Both Katrina Fisher and Anne Smith, coming in neck-and-neck with a time of 1 hour, 2 minutes and 7 seconds, completed the 10K in Tonbridge, while Jackie Austin, Talita Wigg, Louise Marshall and Suzy Saunders smashed the 10 miles down on the south coast for the Great South Run. This was Suzy’s first-ever 10-mile run, which she completed in a fantastic 1 hour, 55 minutes and 3 seconds.

Putting in the distance along the Thames, Striders Kieran Conway and William Wakeman tackled the Abingdon Marathon, crossing the line at 3 hours, 34 minutes and 27 seconds and 4 hours, 7 minutes and 3 seconds respectively.

Rounding off this week’s achievements along the historic canals of the Dutch capital, and representing the Striders on the Continent, Sam Lewis took on the Amsterdam Marathon and will be heading home with another medal and the superb time of 3 hours, 14 minutes and 4 seconds under his belt.

All in all, a great show of grit and stamina from the Sittingbourne Striders this weekend. Congratulations to all!

Marriane & the Great South Run

Marriane inspires team mates with defiant effort
Marriane Seaward showed the big C what she is made of when she sped round the Sittingbourne Parkrun on Saturday, 20 October.

In February Marriane was diagnosed with breast cancer and has since undergone chemotherapy, a lumpectomy and is currently having radiotherapy. Despite this she put on her running shoes to storm round the multi-terrain 5km in 32mins 56secs, much to the delight of her supporters.

Great South run for five Strider ladies

Five Striders travelled to Portsmouth for the Great South Run held on Sunday, 21 October.
The mass participation 10-mile race attracts thousands of runners and the Strider ladies put their best foot forward to return some excellent results.

First back for the Striders was Jackie in 1hr 39mins. Hot on her heels was Lisanne in 1hr 40mins 53secs. Annette and Talita came home close together with Anette at 1hr 50mins 8secs and Talita with 1hr 50mins 43secs.
Jo put in a supreme effort to return a time of 2hrs 4mins 53secs.
