With the swim complete it was on to the 180km bike race. The ride leaves Alcudia and travels along the coast before moving inland to Manacor, then loops back to Alcudia marking the half waypoint. With 90km done the hard work begins as the route heads for the mountains. Travelling through Pollenca towards the Monastery in Lluc, which has a 3pm cut off. Failing to make the cut off means the end of the race. The stunning mountain climb to the monastery is a category 2 hill; stretching over nearly 8km. Tony West was the first Strider to pass the Monastery.
We'd been warned in the race briefing that the decent down the mountain was to be approached with caution. The roads form 'switch backs' with sheer drops. Come off the road and you could be waiting for a helicopter to rescue you. All Striders made it through the bike check point in time and back down the mountain safely. However mechanical failure struck both David Forman and Nick Bayntun. Any outside assistance results in disqualification, therefore all maintenance needs to be performed by the competitor. Luckily they managed to repair or ride on with their respective problems.
The Mallorca 6 all made it back to transition, with Lynne Hacon having her fastest ever 180km bike split! Tony West was the first Strider to start the marathon. The 4 lap route was lined with thousands of tourists and supporters all cheering. With all club members on the marathon it was a welcome relief to see we'd all made it to the final leg. Just a marathon to go! Lynne had started to experience stomach cramps but soldiered on like a hero. As the laps counted down, the end was insight. In an exciting twist Neil overtook Tony 29km into the marathon and after 10hours and 54 minutes of racing was the first Strider to hear the immortal words "You are an Ironman". Tony followed 6 minutes later, then James Brincat in 11hrs 21 mins, David Forman 13hrs 9mins, Nick Bayntun 13hrs 41mins and Lynne Hacon 14hrs 28mins. What a fantastic result for all concerned!!
The Sittingbourne Striders 10 mile road race was the best ever, we had a record number of entries totalling 423 and the runners were set off by Kirsty a Demelza House representative.
The running conditions were perfect, a warm sunny day which also brought out many spectators which added to the great atmosphere.
The club are grateful to all the sponsors this year without whom it wouldn’t be possible to stage this event. Beadles Skoda very kindly provided the lead car which led the runners on the 10 miles route through Rodmersham, Kingsdown, Doddington and back to Highsted School.
The Main race was won by Anthony Jackson of Sittingbourne Striders in a time of 56:56 and the first lady home was Hazel Behagg of Dartford Road Runners in 1:09:15. Both the men & women’s team prizes were won by Dartford Road Runners. The prizes were presented by Dave Buckley of D.Buckley Ltd Plumbing and Heating, the main race sponsor. All the finishers received a medal with a matching T-shirt plus a goodie bag.
There was a Fun Run in aid of Demelza house which had 86 runners aged from 7 months to 44 years. The winners were, 0-4 years, Lucy Booker and Ben Foreman, 5-7 years Callum Drake and Sofia Ellis, 8-11 Harrison and Gabriela Deevoy, 12-16 Luke Stringer and Alexandra Baker Jones. The race raised in excess of £300 and was enjoyed by all, including Strider bear.
